THIGH LIFT

A thigh lift is a procedure that restores a firm, toned, and sculpted appearance to your legs by removing excess skin from the upper legs.

It is recommended for patients who have experienced significant weight loss and have loose or sagging skin due to reduced fat and muscle, which cannot be corrected with liposuction alone.

“Weight loss or the natural aging process, which gradually reduces the skin’s elasticity and firmness, generally leads to increased skin laxity.”

UNDERSTANDING THE PROCEDURE

In my practice, I create a detailed surgical plan based on the degree and extent of skin laxity in the specific area. I usually begin the procedure with liposuction, which removes excess fat while preserving all lymphatic vessels and nerves, improving the thigh’s contour and allowing for faster healing. Next, I remove the excess skin and tighten the remaining tissue along the inner thigh.

The length of the scar varies depending on the extent of correction required.

Small amounts of excess skin and fat can be effectively treated with a mini thigh lift, which leaves a small scar hidden entirely within the groin crease. “More significant laxity requires a more extensive removal, resulting in a longer scar that runs along the inner side of the thigh.”

FOR A MORE CONSCIOUS CHOICE

The ideal candidates for a thigh lift are patients who have followed a weight-loss program that led to a significant and lasting reduction in body weight, resulting in excess skin that cannot be corrected through exercise. This procedure is also suitable for patients with localized fat deposits or thigh lipodystrophy, as well as for those showing early signs of aging. Please note that a thigh lift is not a weight-loss treatment and should never be considered a substitute for a proper diet. It cannot be used to accelerate weight reduction without first establishing healthy eating habits and maintaining regular physical activity. If you are overweight, we strongly recommend beginning a personalized program to reduce overall excess fat before considering any surgical procedure. This approach helps achieve a better aesthetic result.

If you have been longing to regain confidence and feel comfortable in your body and the way you dress, but still notice bothersome loose skin after significant weight loss and physical effort that keeps you from dressing as you wish or feeling good, or even makes you avoid the mirror, it might be time to take care of yourself. Beginning this uplifting journey can greatly enhance your quality of life.

To achieve the best possible results, it is important to be in optimal physical and mental health.  If you are overweight/obese, you must complete a dedicated weight-loss program and maintain a stable weight for several months before surgery to ensure the procedure can effectively remove any remaining excess skin. We will work with you to ensure this is the right decision at the right time. We also recommend considering your lifestyle and personal commitments, as it is essential to give yourself enough time after surgery for a safe recovery. It typically takes about 1 month to return to normal daily activities and about 1-2 months to resume a more active lifestyle, including the gradual return to physical activity. Swelling may take several months to fully subside, and it can take up to a year for the scar to reach its final appearance.

Recovery from this procedure is generally quick and smooth. In the first few days after surgery, you may experience some mild pain, which can be effectively managed with appropriate medication. Swelling in the arms or legs, as well as temporary changes in sensation, may persist for several months. You will need to wear a compression garment on your thighs continuously for 1 month after the procedure. In many cases, we recommend combining manual and device-assisted lymphatic drainage therapies during the postoperative period. Most patients can return to their normal daily activities very quickly. The main restrictions involve avoiding heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for the first 6 weeks. Scars are usually barely visible because they are strategically placed in less-exposed areas. It typically takes about 1 year for the scars to fully mature and for the aesthetic results to be nearly final.

On the day of your surgery, you will be welcomed to the clinic by our team. After the preoperative consultation and surgical markings with Dr. Elisa Bolletta, you will be escorted to the operating room. The procedure will be explained to you again, and you will be administered local anesthesia combined with sedation, or, in some cases, general anesthesia, depending on your needs.

The duration of the procedure varies depending on the extent of the correction. A mini thigh lift may take approximately 1-2 hours, while a more extensive lift can last 2-3 hours.

Thanks to anesthesia, you will not feel any pain during the procedure. In the days following the procedure, you may experience discomfort or tightness in the treated area, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication.

Initial recovery generally lasts 1-2 weeks, with a gradual return to light daily activities. Swelling and any bruising usually resolve within 2-3 weeks, while the scar begins to stabilize and improve over the following months up to 1 year after the procedure.

It is important to avoid physical exertion, heavy lifting, and any activities that could stretch the skin of the thighs. You will be prescribed the use of a compression garment for approximately 6 weeks after the procedure. You will also need to follow instructions for scar care and attend all scheduled follow-up appointments.

As with any surgical procedure, there are some risks, though they are rare. These may include infection, bleeding, imperfect scarring, changes in skin sensation, or asymmetry. Dr. Elisa Bolletta’s extensive experience and careful technique help minimize these risks.

The length and placement of the scar depend on the degree of skin laxity. A longer scar is required to correct a more significant excess, while a mini lift allows the incision to be concealed within your groin crease.

Regular follow-up appointments are scheduled in the days and weeks after the procedure to monitor healing, remove any stitches if needed, and assess the aesthetic outcome. Additional visits will continue over the following months, extending beyond 1 year, to support proper scar healing and monitor long-term results.

The team includes Dr. Elisa Bolletta, an anesthesiologist, operating room nurses, and surgical assistants. They work together to ensure your safety, comfort, and the best experience.
